This whole journey towards clean-living is like a ripple effect – it can easily start making its way into every aspect of your life! The more I read, the more fearful I become, and the more changes I want to incorporate into my home! Yes, that even includes the diapers and wipes we use! I’m not going to lie, my husband kind of rolled his eyes at me about this one, but he respected my wishes to make the change to safer (and inevitably more expensive) diapers and wipes.
I’m sure you’ve read or heard about harmful chemicals, dyes, preservatives, etc. that are found in many of the well-know brands of diapers and wipes. Of course these companies claim that the levels are extremely low and pose no harm, but that just didn’t sit well with me – of course they’re going to say that about their products!
I thought about making a more drastic switch to those hybrid cloth diapers, but my husband was totally not on board with that – claiming he would no longer help out with diaper changes if I took it to this level! So, we compromised and I searched for the best non-toxic disposable diapers and wipes.
Diapers: After stumbling upon Baby Gear Lab’s ranking of the best non-toxic disposable diapers, I decided to give their #1 ranking diaper, Bambo Nature, a whirl. And, I’ve been very pleased! However, I will say that there have been a couple of times (only a couple out of the hundreds upon hundreds of diapers changes) where the diaper just completely leaked…not through the sides, like the just-a-lot-of-pee-pee-leak you’d think of. More like, just-completely-soaked-through-the-diaper-itself kind of leak. Weird! But, I just figured it was a fluke and I keep on buying them – at 23% off from my new favorite “Costco meets Whole Foods” membership site – Thrive Market – which I absolutely love – it deserves its very own blog post! When I’m in a pinch and waiting for my Bambo Nature diaper order to arrive, my go-to can-buy-at-Target brand of diapers (and training pants) is Honest Co.
Wipes: When I read the claims about glass being found in Huggies wipes and preservatives causing nasty skin rashes on babies, I immediately began looking into the potential dangers of harmful chemicals used in baby wipes and decided it was time to make a switch! When I found WaterWipes – “the world’s purest wipes” – made of 99.9% water and 0.01% fruit extract, I was immediately sold! I absolutely love them (aside from their less-than-perfect packaging). Being “the world’s purest wipes” that they are, there are no preservatives – which means shorter shelf life once opened. Totally fine by me – actually, I prefer that. So, I simply write the opened on date on each bag, and if I haven’t used them all up within 4 weeks, I toss ‘em – no big deal.
For me, just the thought of my little darlings being wrapped up in and constantly wiped down with something less than perfectly safe didn’t sit well with me. So, switching to safe, non-toxic diapers and wipes has given me the peace of mind I so needed. If you’ve had these same concerns, I hope you’ve found this post helpful.
